Navigating text in cells

Pretty much anywhere you come across an editable text field, you can use the
cursor keys and common shortcuts (End, Home, Ctl+Cursor, etc) to navigate
text.

Anywhere, that is, except when editing text in an Excel cell where these
keys are used to navigate between the cells.

I don't understand why Excel can't tell when I'm editing within a cell and
react to these keys in the same way as any other editable text area. I
can't find any setting to change this.

It drives me mad because I use Excel quite a lot. Is there any way to
change this behaviour?

Press F2 to edit the cell and the directional arrows will work like you
want them to.

Thanks Goober.

All these years I'd never noticed the difference between entering text and
editing text.
