NAV2004/Win2k - Norton Antivirus Auto-Protect Driver could not be loaded

U

usenetdg

This happened today with NAV 2004 on a Windows 2000 Professional, SP4
machine.

When I turned the computer on this morning, it went through the normal
boot/start, and then as the programs were being loaded, I got a popup
warning message saying:

"Norton Antivirus Auto-Protect Driver could not be loaded. Your system
is not protected from viruses. Please restart your computer."

So I restarted and got the same thing.

Followed the instructions on
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...a9355322a1bff6e365256c54000fdcc3?OpenDocument
(VERY long link!) and nothing worked. In fact, under "Make sure that
needed Windows services are running (Windows 2000 only)" on that page,
I couldn't even find "cryptographic services" that it referred to (why
not?).

So I finally uninstalled NAV per the instructions, then reinstalled.
Once reinstalled, I had to do several successive restarts, run live
update, restart, etc. (And of course, per the instructions on the
Symantec web site, I was restarting my computer each time I needed to
prior to reinstalling).

After one of the live update/restart sequences, darned if I didn't get
the same thing (the "Norton Antivirus Auto-Protect Driver could not be
loaded" popup) again. Instead of throwing the computer in the lake
like I wanted to, I just ran live update again, it found at least one
more update, applied it, had me restart, and the system started fine
with autoprotect finally enabled. So I'm guardedly comfortable.

But what the heck happened here? The computer is free of spyware
(Spybot and Ad-aware are updated and run regularly). NAV had done a
full scan three days ago and come up clean. The auto update was
working fine and my virus definitiions (again, autoupdated) were
current as of six days ago. And yet I needed to uninstall/reinstall
NAV, encountered the same problem that triggered all this, and one
final running of Live Update finally solved this, at least for now.
Almost makes me wonder if running another Live Update before I
uninstalled and reinstalled would have accomplished the same thing.

Anyone else have this happen today? The computer in question is shut
down every night and restarted each morning, and I know it started
fine, with auto-protect enabled, the two previous mornings after the
last full NAV scan.

You may already have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://vil.mcafeesecurity.com/vil/averttools.asp

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:

download AdAware SE Personal Edition from www.lavasoftusa.com, install,
update, and run it to remove spyware, adware, and other such nasties from
your system.

Same thing happened to me today too. Last night A-OK, today bam! One
interesting thing I have noted is that my IBK Thinkpad T42 that I
bought in October has NEVER been able to run LiveUpdate. I don't have
it here in front of me, but the error message has something to do with
my security settings being too high (medium, the Windows default).

I have tried Symantec's cryptic web help all to no avail.

I'm firing Symantec and buying something else!

In their defense, the computer gets started at least once, often more,
per day, live updated once or more per week, has two weekly scheduled
virus scans, and this had not happened before, ever.

And I have been running NAV 2000 and 2004 for almost six years.
