NAT Error

A

Arlen Baker

I have a Windows 2000 Server that has both a private and public NIC. It is
a DNS Server, DHCP Server, Web Server, and Email Server (for now).

I am using NAT to make the connection between the private and public NICs,
but I receive the following Information message in the Event Viewer:

The Network Address Translator (NAT) was unable to update the local
address-resolution table to respond to requests for IP address 205.160.37.16
and mask 255.255.255.255. Address-resolution may fail to operate for
addresses in the given range. This error may indicate a problem with TCP/IP
networking, or it may indicate lack of support for address-resolution in the
underlying network interface. The data is the error code. 84 03 00 00

I don't know why the network mask is 255.255.255.255 instead of
255.255.255.0 and I cannot find where I can reset it. I have been through
all NAT and RRAS Screens and can seem to locate it. Does anyone know
how/where I can adjust the NAT network mask at?

Also, I have sporadic problems surfing from the client machines (Windows
2000 Pro)...some can surf the web and other get partial pages loaded or no
page at all (e.g. Server error or DNS Error page).

Thanks for your help.

My suggestion, perhaps OT - get a separate router/firewall instead of
turning your server into a router. Especially when this server is already
doing so much.

Also, all servers and workstations should specify the internal AD-integrated
DNS server's IP address in their network settings. The AD-integrated DNS
server should be set up with forwarders to several public DNS servers for
external resolution.

See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;300202 for more
info.
