Naming Conventions

I am trying to come up with a naming conventions for groups in AD and
Exchange and was wondering if someone can point me to a good place to find
it.

I have been using. But were about to join 2 domains into one and thought I
should come up with a standard before hand.

Security Groups are _SE_Name
Distribution Lists are _DL_Name
Public Folder Groups are _PF_Name.

I haven't really seen anything documented since this is pretty site specific. I
would avoid putting group scope and type in the name though because they can
change. And in the case of DLs they can change to Security groups through no
action of the admins. If someone takes a DL and decides to ACL something with
it, Exchange will change it automatically to a security group.

After that I generally say to avoid spaces, special non-us characters, and
underscores in the names because various programs can have issues with them and
if you use a web site for displaying them the characters (especially the
underscore) can be confusing.

Other than that, make the name descriptive if security allows it.

Thank you for the reply. You brought up some good points. It seems like if
you had the type in the name it would help to avoid the inadvertent changing
of a DLs to security groups.

Also your tools kick A@*

Thanks on the tools comment.

You could hope the name would help the inadvertant change but since any normal
user can initiate that change you can't really depend on it.
