Name resolution problems

Jason

Hi - I hope someone can help me - it's few years since I
knew what I was doing with network problems and this one's
really got me stumped (so it's probably something really
basic I overlooked)!!

I have three Win2k machines on a home network. All works
fine as a workgroup with static IP addressing (nothing in
LMHOSTS anywhere, just netbios name resolution).

I added a new Win XP laptop. IP stuff is all fine - I can
ping addresses, I can even telnet to another machine using
its IP address.

However, nothing involving the new PC and name resolution
works. Others show new machine's name in NET VIEW, but
cannot do anything else with it (ping NEWPC can't find
host). New PC can't even see the others on NET VIEW.

nbtstat -n on new PC - computer and workgroup names are
registered correctly (workgroup name three times and
computer name twice, plus MSBROWSE). On the other
machines we have the same, PLUS their own name registered
a third time (code 03) and the user name (also code 03)
registered too. Can't find out what these codes mean
anywhere!

Thanks in anticipation. Jason.

Jason,

please have a look at http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm,
particularly the part that mentions NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

Many thanks for the help.

The solution to the problem was that my new laptop with XP
was also pre-installed with Symantec Client Firewall!
Disabled this, all works fine.

Jason.

Jason,

thanks for reporting. Yes, the firewalls are the most frequent
cause of problems.
