Nail.exe

I got rid of Aurora / Nail.exe with Beta 1 . However,
after I rebooted my computer, a windows warning message
warning keeps poping up each time I turn on my computer.
The message is " C:\WINDOWS cannot locate nail.exe . Make
sure the path or the spelling is correct. To locate a
file, go to start, and then click search. " My question
is how can I get rid of the annoying windows message? Can
anyone know how ?

There are at least three ways to do this:

1) try a further scan with Microsoft Antispyware. In the case of some other
removals that left such detritus, a further scan removed the leftover bit.
Might be worth a try--tell us if it works?

2) You can use MSCONFIG to uncheck the startup item which creates this error
message, I believe--check through the startup items in MSCONFIG. You then
have to check a box not to be reminded that you have stuff disabled via
MSCONFIG at every startup, but this works, and is safe.

3) You could look in Tools, Advanced tools, System Explorers, and see if you
can spot the startup item there, and block it (can't recall the
terminology--is it disable??)

4) You could use the information you might find via MSCONFIG or the system
explorers to actually edit the registry and remove the item. This is
high-risk activity--make a backup of the registry key involved and be sure
you've got the right stuff. It'd be nice of the earlier steps panned out.

Heres how you can remove that, you must of had a older
variant of Aurora as that is being removed by MSAS but I
believe it changed towards the end of July to make things
abit more difficult and now Nail isnt being detected as
well as other parts of this.

Here's 3 fixes :

1.
Run Spybot S&D as it will repair that line and return it
to explorer.exe

2.
if you have XP, open notepad and copy this into it:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"Shell"="Explorer.exe"

Save it as type "All Files" and call it fix.reg save it
to your desktop and double click the reg file and choose
allow to merge it into the registry

3.

Open regedit and navigate to this key :

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]

left click Winlogon and it will open the values on the
right pane scroll through the list and find this entry

Name Data

shell = "Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\nail.exe"

right click shell and choose modify

delete the C:\WINDOWS\nail.exe but leave explorer in
place so it looks like this:

Explorer.exe

Then press ok and exit regedit

Because this site breaks up the lines you may be best
going for this with spybot or by editing the registry,

There should only be one space between Windows NT when
its copied to notepad so it shows :

"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon"

Ive just copied the one I gave you back to notepad and it
shows 2 spaces between Windows and NT so it will not work
unless you remove one of the spaces, Not sure if its my
mistake but wanted to let you know its needs changing or
use Spybot as that may be easier for you

Thanks Andy--Spybot Search & Destroy sounds like the easiest way.

The line breakage is another aspect of the old HTML interface that continues
to impede technical communication in these groups.
