Mystery Problem

Reposting the info again, I still can't connect to the Internet.
A PC and a laptop are connected to a DSL router. The PC connects to the
Internet and is fine. The laptop sometimes manages to connect, but it lasts
only for as long as the laptop stays on. The next time I turn it on, I lose
the connection. When it's offline, the ipconfig/renew command doesn't work
because it says that the DHCP server cannot be contacted. (I'll replace the
DSL router and cable to see if this fixes it.) The other day, the command
worked, but still there was no connection. The IP address assigned begins
with 192.168 so that checks out...
I can't pinpoint the problem, and neither can't my ISP. Does anyone have any
ideas as to what the problem might be?

Mithrandir,

Is it a Wireless connection you have with your Laptop ? also, could you
please check whether the DHCP service in Laptop has ben started if it is a
Windows XP computer.

To do that:

1. Click start | Run.
2. Then type services.msc and press the ok button.
3. Check whether the DHCP service is started or not.
4. If it is not, then start it by clicking on the start button and set the
startup type as Autiomatic.

Check whether that helps.

Jason

Thanks a lot guys, I'll try these suggestions.

How do I assign a static IP? I haven't tried that yet and am not familiar
with it.

Also I have a wired connection, ethernet cable.

I just remembered. I had virus problems before my laptop started getting
Internet problems... I ran McAfee and deleted several PUPs. Could I have
deleted something that McAfee labeled as a PUP that shouldn't have been
deleted, in relation to my Internet connection problem? How do I check if I'm
missing a file that I might need to get online?

(Sorry for the triple post. I really have to get my laptop online before
school starts...)
