Mysteriously large worksheets

It seems that some worksheets become very large for no
apparent reason. The number of rows and columns are
gigantic, making scrolling with the scrollbar very
difficult. I've tried clearing all of the empty cells
with no result. Any ideas?

Don't clear the cells, select everything to the right and below your data,
then do edit>delete,
save the workbook..
