Mysterious attachment problem

Nick1966

Hi,

I am experiencing problems with e-mails attachments from a particular
machine on a small office network The situation is as follows,

All machines on network are using Outlook 2000

All machines are able to compose e-mails and attach documents

On sending attachments to clients [Word 2000] from a particular machine the
recipient cannot see / open the attachment. On the recipient smachine [using
Outlook Express] no attachment icon is visible in the message window, on
right clicking and choosing Properties then Message Source I can see that
the attachment is there but it's name has been changed to "winmail.dat".
from a .doc format. When sending to a hotmail address the attachment is
visible but again the filename is changed to "winmail.dat" and Word cannot
open the document.

Apologies for the long explanation, [hope it is clear], does anyone know a
possible reason for this?

Thanks

Nick

Hi. I'm not familiar with the problem but if you type
winmail.dat into Google you'll probably find a solution.
I did and here are a couple of pages that might help:

Make sure you use HTML or Plain Text format when sending messages to Outlook
Express users, or users of any other e-mail client besides Outlook. Don't
use Rich Text format, which is proprietary to Outlook and will cause
problems for other recipients, one of which is that they won't get your
attachments -- they'll usually get that "winmail.dat" file instead.
