Mysteriously, a ASP.NET user account has shown up my system and i have no
idea why. It stops my system from going all the way to the desktop, instead
it now stops to ask which user i want to log on. Any comments.

I think this is because you have just installed MS's .net framework, which
is possibly because you just installed Norton Ghost 9.0 ?
If so, you can delete the ASP account. This will not, (usually), upset your
new Norton Ghost 9.0 install. ...it didn't upset mine!

regards,Richard

Hey Jim ... You recieve that because you downloaded net framework 1.1 ,
which is ok , If you go back to windows updates you will notice another
update for it and this will allow you to logon without any logo screen

To restore the autologon use this process:

1. Go to Start | Run and type in: control userpasswords2 | Ok.

2. On the Users tab, clear the Users Must Enter A User Name And Password
To Use This Computer check box and then click OK.

3. In the Automatically Log On dialog box that appears, type the user
name and password for the account you want to be logged on each time you
start your computer.

You can accomplish the same thing by:

Download and install tweakui for xp and use its auto logon feature.

Lastly you can add the Dialog box that comes up when running control
userpasswords 2 to the Control Panel with the following tweak:

Add Control User Passwords2 to the Control Panel (Line 1)

Thank you for the info, you were right. I did just download the .net
framewark update. thanks again

Jim

Thanks for the prompt response, I did just install the .net framework as
part of the normal update. I did not install norton ghost though, but
install one of HP's all in one printers with the web sharing option. I wonder
if that is what did it. Thanks again

Common issue, Jim. Workaround:

This is caused by the Net Framework update:

Welcome to Windows Screen Appears When You Start Windows XP After You
Install the .NET Framework 1.1: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=827072

1. Go to Start/Run and type in: control userpasswords2 and press ok.

2. On the Users tab, left click your user name then clear the Users Must
Enter A User Name And Password To Use This Computer check box and then click
OK.

3. In the Automatically Log On dialog box that appears, type the "user name
and password" for the account you want to be logged on each time you start
your computer.

Tip:

Add Control UserPasswords2 to the Control Panel (Line 1)

It arises from installing the .NET framework update. Quite why it is
installed I have not discovered. Easiest - Use TweakUI - one of the XP
Powertoys from (if you have installed XP SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP

Its Logon page, uncheck 'Show ASPNet on Welcome screen'
