My read emails get deleted on AOL server when read on Outlook

I just setup my Outlook 2003 to view my AOL emails and everything works just
fine except when I read an email in Outlook it gets taken off of the AOL
server when I check my email there. (i.e. Lets say I have 5 brand new emails
in my Inbox in Outlook and I read each of them for the first time and then I
close Outlook right after that and login to AOL and those emails I just read
are not in my "New Mail" even though I never deleted or moved them in
Outlook.) If I were on AOL and read an email for the first time and just
click "Keep as New" it stays in my "New Mail" just not bolded (unread) like
before. I'm looking for my emails to work the exact same way in Outlook. Any
suggestions?

Are you using POP3 access to get your AOL mail into Outlook? If so, you will
need to set Outlook to leave a copy of your messages on the server. Go to
Tools | E-mail Accounts, select View or change existing e-mail accounts,
click Next, select your AOL mail account, click Change, click More Settings,
then click the Advanced tab. In the Delivery section, check Leave a copy of
messages on the server, then you can choose whether or not to remove them
from the server after a number of days and/or to remove them from the server
if you delete them from Outlook's Deleted Items folder.

Do they show in your AOL "Old Mail"?

That's just not usual behavior for an IMAP account. I suspect the IMAP
server on AOL is contributing to the problem. Ask AOL's support staff.

Yes, when I read an email in outlook without deleting or moving it, then
close Outlook and goto aol.com to check my email, that email goes in my old
mail.

That's how it's supposed to work. AOL moves read mail into the "Old Mail"
folder unless you mark it Unread.

Is there anyway around this? Do you know how long the mail stays in "Old
Mail" before it gets deleted? Is there a way to read email in outlook without
it ever even being marked as read?

Mark the messages unread in Outlook.

27 days.

So as far as you know there is no way to read an email in outlook, WITHOUT
doing anything to it afterwards such as marking read, moving it to a
different folder, etc. and it stays in "New Mail" on AOL?

That is correct. If you read a message, and don't mark it Unread, AOL
considers it read.

That's kind of like asking how you can drive your car from point A to point
B without using any gas. The solution is to refill your tank. :)

Yeah I understand that, but if I'm in on aol.com looking at a never seen
before email and after reading it, I click Save As New, it stays in the "New
Mail" folder, just now its not bolded showing that I have read it. I'm trying
to get that same setup for outlook. Is this possible?

One more question I have is that everytime I open outlook, Windows Messenger
opens, do you know why this is? Is it necessary to have open? If not, how can
I stop this from happening? Thanks for your help.
