My presentation crashes when I play an MPEG video. Why?

My PowerPoint 2003 presentation crashes when I try to play a linked MPEG
video. I have tried several videos, all of which have worked in PowerPoint
before. What is happening?

Try this: Go to Start > Run. Type mplay32.exe and click okay. That opens the
MCI player. Open your MPG. Does the player crash? Does it play the video? Or
do you get a message of any kind? If so, what is the exact and full message?

The player crashed on ALL MPEGS, even ones that would play in the Windows
Media player. This problem was referred by a client who had the presentation
crash with these videos on all their systems. We were able to make it work by
transcoding to AVI and replacing the MPEGs in the PowerPoint. Also, NO MPEGs
work in ANY PowerPoint presentation, even a new, blank presentation. The
problem occurs on multiple machines. The only common thread is PPT 2003 and
Windows XP. It happens with or without SP2.

PowerPoint shuts down. I get the "Encountered error, do you wish to report"
window. The system doesn't shut down. I will check your link, but have been
able to utilize video in PPT for several years and wonder why this process no
longer works.

[TOP ISSUE - Are you having difficulty opening presentations in PowerPoint
that you just created (you can save, but not open)? -

Hello,

Did you know that you can automatically send a crash report to Microsoft
nearly any time an Office 2002 or Office System 2003 application crashes?

When the crash occurs a crash reporting dialog will appear with a message
that begins something like: "Microsoft Office <application> has encountered
a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

When this occurs:

1) Click on "What data does this report contain?
2) Note down the following information:

* AppName:
* AppVer:
* AppStamp:
* ModName:
* ModVer:
* ModStamp:
* fDebug:
* Offset:

3) There might also be a "bucket" number. If so, note down that number as
well.
3) Click "Close"
4) Click "Send Error Report

If you post the information noted in steps 2 and 3 above to this newsgroup
I might be able to verify whether or not this is already a known issue and,
if it's known, possibly a way to avoid or fix the problem in the future.

THank you for the reply. Yes, the updates were already installed. I have
worked around the problem for the time being by converting the MPEG files to
AVI. Our client is happy; the fix works. IN the meantime, when I have a
chance, I will replicate the issue and send the requested information

since they are mpegs
i would check if the individual files play in the windows mci player
start -> run -> mplay32 (for xp)
start -> run -> mplayer (win9x)

what happens?
does it give you an error in mciqtz32.dll?
do you have any dvd software insstalled on your computer..check add remove
programs.. for apps like
muvee autoproducer
sony screenblast

do a search for mc*.ax and if you find any results check the path, rename
the files to .bak and restart
test again in mplay32

lost
