I've just upgraded my operating system from '98 to xp
pro. After installing i went to microsoft update to
download some critical updates, but every time i connect
to the internet, after about 5 minutes or so a message
box keeps appearing saying "windows will shut down in 60
seconds, This shut down was initiated by NT Authority
system, Remote Procedure call service was terminated
unexpectedly" My pc then procedes to close down! Please
help before i go mad!!!!!

Sounds like your infected but I can't remember which worm does this. First,
right click My Computer and choose Manage. Under Services double click on
Remote Procedure Call. There's a tab that controls what happens when the
service fails. By default it's set to reboot the computer. Change it to
Restart Service. That will prevent the reboots. Now you can go about fixing
the infection. All major antivirus vendors and most have free tools to
remove the infection.

Apparently, your computer has an unwelcome visitor (VIRUS) known
as the WM32 Blaster/Lovsan WORM. It only takes a split second for
this WORM to infect your computer if a firewall is not enabled and you
have an active internet connection.

It entered the computer through the internet connection because the "firewall"
was not properly enabled and essential critical updates were not installed from
the Windows Update website. For instructions on fixing the problem, visit:

If your computer is constantly attempting to shutdown
or reboot, quickly go to:

Start > Run and type: CMD , and hit enter.
This opens the Command Prompt window.

Then type: shutdown -a , and hit enter.

This should halt the rebooting problem.

Then immediately turn-on Windows XP's built-in Firewall:
