My MS Word 2000 quit working and won't reinstall.

Every time I try to create a new MS Word document, my computer completely
freezes up. I un-installed Word and reinstalled it, but that didn't work. I
cannot even open old, already-created Word documents. I am practically
computer illiterate and have exhausted all I know or thought to do...
