We Live For The One We Die For The One

I have a ATI 9600 Pro, Packard Bell Monitor.

I suspect its the card or the monitor :)

The monitor aint that great i think, though it might be the card ?

have no idea.

The screen just gos black, it kind of explodes outwards when it does
this.

It crackels and shit like when you turn it off, but the power for the
monitor is still on >??

It happens most when i first powers on, but happens randomly after
that, somtimes stays on for ages sometimes not ?

Also sometimes when i power it on, the power seems to pulse rapidly on
the monitor but not come on, takes a few gos to get it on ?

Anyone have this problem.

Outwards is odd.

Crackling can be the due to the electric field collapsing in the HT coils...
probably normal.

Definately sounds like PSU - it's under the most strain when you first turn
it on.

Uh ha.

Sounds like the monitor PSU is giving up the ghost.

Your local TV repairman might be able to help.

Howmuch for a monitor PSU ??

It's not an off-the-shelf component... cost of repair depends whats wrong.
It could be as simple as a capacitor or two.
Worth the repair ??

"Packard Bell Monitor" could be anything from an old crappy 14" POS to a 19"
Trinitron (maybe).

Only you can decide whether or not you think it's worth the repair.

My vote goes to a new monitor. Unless you're capable of repairing it
yourself -- and few of us are -- just the diagnostic fee takes you halfway
to the cost of a new monitor. By the time you replace even a few standard
components you've spent almost as much as a replacement would cost, and you
still have an old CRT that looks like crap.

It might only be 13 months old... and be a 21" monster worth £500 for all
you know.

I doubt it though.

I don't think Packard Bell ever sold a 21" monitor, or one that was worth
£50, much less £500. They stopped selling them in the U.S. years ago, mainly
because people stopped buying them.

I once had an old 17" Acer monitor that exhibited identical symptoms, and
got the same advice from a qualified technician who could have taken my
money to repair it.

I'm really glad I took that advice. I gave away the Acer, and about a month
later it sputtered out for the final time and wound up in the landfill.

For slightly more than the estimated cost of the repair, I got a 19"
Viewsonic with much better image quality. It's already lasted a couple of
years longer than the Acer, and seems like it will be good for a few more.

Not really... :)

Does it smell nice yet? (do the nose test at the vent closest to the power
cord)

Smells fine :)

Took my like 10 times to get it on again.

But once its ont it seems to stay on,maybe it just needs to warm up
now :)

Like a old bucket of boilts rust bucket car.

Its over 3 years old maybe alittle more.

I have a NEC 4D that is about 10 years old and still works fine. Just
have to wait 5 minutes for it to reach full brightness. Something to be
said for using high quality components.

Power on is significantly more stressfull for the PSU than other other time.
Especially if it tries to degauss... ouch!
