I'm not a fan of most "big brand name pcs," but that's a drastic
overstatement.

OK, but then, how do you account for the original problem:


My harddrive crashed a few days ago and I bought a new one. I tried to use
a
set of recovery CDs that I purchased from HP - but the first (of 7) CD
immediately gives an error saying that this "PC System is not supported".
I'm convinced I ordered the right CD set "

HP Recovery CDs usually only work on the identical hardware
configuration for which they were designed. I've seen HP Recovery CDs
fail if the RAM has been upgraded; you're trying it on a different hard
drive.
