My .exe's won't execute

Thanks in advance for any help.

My XP Pro installation 'died' either after a virus
or damage from multiple cycling re-boots/un-intentional
power-offs due to a faulty UPS. Latest Norton AV doesn't
find anything.

Most of my .exe have lost their 'application' designation
and won't run directly. For instance, the word application
has the generic icon and won't run when I double click.
However, a Word document still has the Word icon and will
launch Word if I double click the document. Same with most
all my applications.

I've check the registry and the settings for .exe in HKEY-
CLASSES_ROOT is the same for another PC I have. I know a
little about PC's, but obviously not enough...

Any suggestions?

Go to http://www.dougknox.com/. Click on Win XP Fixes on the left side,
then File Association Fixes near in the left column - then EXE File
Association Fix.
