My Document folder

B

Bob Brannon

Every time I rename my document folder (on the start menu) it takes but then
the next time I start up my computer it is renamed back to "My documents"
even though in Windows Explorer it retains the name I gave it. Anyway to
make the renaming stick?

Hello Bob,

Check the following registry key and make sure that the data in the Default
value is set to the name you would prefer -

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CLSID\{
450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103}

Also, the only item you should see is Default, if there is more then please
let me know what else is listed.

I don't have that key, but I do have about 42 others under "CLSID".

Hello Shain,

Forgot to let you know that it used to be listed correctly all the time on
the start menu and now for some reason it is always calling it "My
documents". Why would it have changed?

Also, what does PSS stand for?

Thank you,
Bob

Hello Shain,

Well I did what you suggested and it worked, including the renaming, until I
restarted. Then it was back to "My documents" and I checked the registry
and that entry was gone again. So as another test I simply renamed the
start menu link again and the registry entry then reappeared. But when I
restart it is gone again and the name reverted back to "My documents".

So, a couple of questions: 1) Why does this happen?, 2) Why would the
registry entry be gone in the first place? and 3) How can I fix this to
keep it from happening?

Thanks,
Bob

Hello Bob,

Thanks for the reply. Okay, so you have many in there but not the one we
need. I have attached a registry file that will add this CLSID in for you.
However, if you are missing other entries this will likely do nothing.

Once you have grabbed the file, then go ahead and rename it to mydocs.reg,
then double click on it. Once it merges into your registry see if your My
Documents folder is called Test. If so, now try to rename it and see what
happens.

If this does not work, we can remove the registry entry.

By the way PSS stands for Product Support Services.

you rename My Computer and have it stick through a reboot?

I just looked in settings under user profiles under the advanced tab under
system properties and it says my user profile is 2.4 GB. Any idea why it
would be so big?!

Hello Bob,

1. If your profile is 2.4 gigs and you are not sure why, check to see what
folders are the biggest size in your profile by right clicking and doing
properties. It will count up the size of the folder. It if is large, then
dig deeper into the folder to see what it is. Once you determine what
folder and files most of the space is being consumed by, let me know.

2. To fix the permissions problem, try the following -

Go into your profile and find the NTUSER.DAT file, right click it and
choose properties. Choose the Security tab and make sure that you have
Full Control of the file. If not, give yourself full control. If it is
grayed but checked this means it is propagated from the parent folder. So
check the uplevel folder and make sure you have full control here.

Hello Shain,

1) Am I correct to assume the profile includes all the documents in the
user folder under "Documents and settings"? If so, then all the space is
for all the documents and images I have there.

2) I am not sure how to go into my profile to look at properties for this
file. If it is the folder under "Documents and settings" with my user name
then the only tab for the file is the "General" tab (I am using XP Home).
The only way I could find to get to a security tab is Safe Mode. By doing
that I do have full control, though it is grayed. The parent folder does
have full control though.

3) Notwithstanding the above, when I rename the folder and restart the name
(on the Start Menu) still reverts back to "My Documents", even though the
folder name does not change.

4) I am still wondering why this would have happened in the first place
since the new name I gave it stuck for months?

Thanks,
Bob

Hello Bob,

1. Yes, the profile name under Documents and Settings contains the users
My Documents.

2. Correct on XP Home you can only see the Security tab in Safe Mode. So,
it looks like you have full control as you should.

Okay new steps to try -

1. If you go into Safe Mode and rename it, then reboot and boot back into
Safe Mode instead of normal mode, does the name change back?

2. If no, then we have some process that is changing it in Normal mode and
I will send instructions on how to troubleshoot that.

3. If yes, then we need to see what is changing it which is very in depth
troubleshooting and I will have to get you a detailed write up or call you
to walk you through the steps.

I will be out of the office on Monday, so I will pick this back up on
Tuesday with you.

Hello Shain,

I don't know if this sheds any light but will share anyway. For some reason
the naming took through a restart, for a while. Then I changed a scheduled
task (Symantec NETDETECT)to run at logon instead of daily. That's all I
did, didn't restart or run the task or anything, didn't even close out of
the task scheduler. I looked at the start menu and the document folder was
back to "My Documents" instead of what I named it ( I watched it change as
soon as the start menu opened).

Now for the rest:

1. No the name did not change back. This is what I did before what I just
described above.

2 & 3. OK, will look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks for your help. I know this isn't an issue that effects performance
but is annoying nonetheless.

Thanks,

Hello Bob,

Okay, so in Safe Mode the name does NOT change back to My Documents. This
is a good thing because it should be easy to troubleshoot.

Please to do the following -

A) Go to Start\Run and type
MSCONFIG <OK>
B) In MSConfig, choose "Selective Startup"
C) Remove all check boxes and click "OK" and "Yes" to reboot.
Then test our issue.
D) If you don't see the problem at this point, check all except "System
Services" and "Startup Items", click "OK" and "Yes".
Reboot then test our issue.
E) If you don't see the problem at this point, check all except "System
Services", click "OK" and "Yes".
Reboot and then test our issue.
F) If the problem returns, it is due to a Startup Item. If not, it is a
Service.
For Services:
G) Click the Services tab and check the box for "Hide all Microsoft
Services."
H) Enable SOME of the disabled items, click "OK" and "Yes".
Reboot, then test our issue.
For Startup Items:
I) Click the Startup tab and enable SOME of the disabled items, click "OK"
and "Yes".
Reboot, then test our issue.
J) Repeat until you track down the offending component.

I don't know if this helps, but as long as I do not have a scheduled task
set to "run at logon" I don't have a problem with naming the document
folder. Does this shed any light or should I follow your procedure.

Hello Bob,

It may be a red herring, so I want to clean boot first and make sure that
it is just the scheduled task. So please go through the steps and confirm
whether or not it is the task or something else in conjunction with the
task.

OK, I did everything you said and the problem did not recur even with
everything but the Microsoft services enabled. As soon as I restarted
Normal, after having everything but MS services enabled before that, the
problem recurred. The item I have in scheduled tasks to run at logon is the
calculator, not that I need it but as a test. The other task I had to run
at logon I changed not to.

Hello Bob,

Okay, well it looks like it is the specific task. Can you copy the task
and paste it into your next newsgroup response. I would like to look at it.

Also, create a generic task that start Calc.exe, set it to start to at
reboot and let me know if the same problem occurs. If not, it is clearly
just this task.

Hello again Shain,

I am copying the task here, but I need to let you know that whatever task I
have scheduled to run at logon, the conflict occurs. I used to have
Symantec Netdetect set to run at logon and the same conflict occurred, so I
changed that to a daily thing with multiple run times and that fixed it. I
just setup the calculator job to run at logon to duplicate the problem for
the testing you
wanted me to do.

I did the generic task at startup with the calculator and that duplicated
the problem. I should also let you know though, that the calculator did not
appear. It was not in the list of applications in Windows task manager
either, but was in the list of processes.

Regards,
Bob

Hello Bob,

Thanks for the update. The calc.exe not showing up except in the list of
processes is normal. This is because it was being run non-interactively.

If this happens with any job you schedule to run at logon, then this is a
different story. I will do some testing and see if I can reproduce the
problem.
