All of the sudden when I try to open my "Documents" folder, whether from the
Start Menu or Explorer, it opens for about 2 seconds and then the Windows
error message stating that Explorer has stopped working and needs to restart.
I can't get to the root directory at all, but when going through My Computer
I can at least expand it to access the subdirectories. Can someone tell me
what's going on and how to fix this?

hello... doesnt the folder open at all? My first thought was a video codec
crashing when its trying to render the thumbnail (if you have a video file
in that folder)

Im gonna tell you about 2 programs here that dont install much on windows,
so dont worry about installing them.. they are vista compatible too.

You can use a trial file manager (a windows explorer replacment) to manage
the files to see if there is something in there that is causing the crash...
some file inside that folder... download and install this www.xyplorer.com
perhaps if you remove those files it will stop crashing with windows
explorer

if that is not the case then:

try this: download shellexview, this shows what extensions are added to
windows explorer
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/shellexview.html

install it, run it and see all the PINK ones that are all non-microsoft
ones... disable them, and see if this stops the crashing.. (dont worry you
can re-enable them again)

if it does stop crashing you can start re-enabling some of them and slowley
with trial and error you will find the one that is crashing explorer.

Tell me if any of this this helps... im curious

Checked the event logs? Click Start, type eventvwr.msc and press ENTER. Select Application log and check if there are any "error" entries registered during the time when the crash occurred.

Yep, that's the problem. Video codec issue in thumbnail. I just opened the
event viewer and it is showing the following as the error:

MpegSplitter.ax

By "viewing" the folder as "list" instead of large icons/thumbnails it is
fine. Not sure why it is messing up, and only with that folder?

May be the third-party Codec is incompatible with Vista?

Display Name : Mpeg Splitter
Description : Mpeg Splitter
Version : 1, 0, 0, 4
Company : Gabest
Filename : %ProgramFiles%\VistaCodecPack\filters\MpegSplitter.ax
Product Name : Mpeg Splitter
