Having just left my husband, I have taken charge of our computer. I was just
trying to update to SP2 this morning, and have now found out that the copy of
Windows XP I've been using isn't genuine! I'm assuming my ex-husband knew
full well that it's not, but didn't feel the need to make me savvy to the
fact.

I have no problems purchasing a genuine copy of Windows Xp and will do so
tomorrow, however I'm worried about the effect installing it on my computer
might have. Will it just install directly over the pirate version, or will I
have to completely wipe the computer and start again? If so, is it possible
to make a back-up of all files and folders onto my memory stick? (I suspect
not)

If any one has any idea of the affect this would have on my computer, I'd be
very grateful if you could email me ASAP (and tell me what to do in simple
steps, as I'm not terribly techo)

Thanks!

The Genuine Advantage Product Key Update Tool is only valid for users
attempting to change their current non-genuine Product Key to a genuine COA
sticker or genuine Product Key - all without a reinstall!

In order to resolve your non-genuine licensing issue,
please visit: www.microsoft.com/genuine and click on
"Validate Windows". When validation fails, you'll see
a button to click on which will provide information on
how to acquire a WGA Kit.

Thanks guys,

But surely I can only use the WGA kit if I have a) a pirated copy of Windows
XP CD, or b) leftover packaging? I did have a look, and I can't find anything
like that here anywhere, so I'm pretty confidant that my ex downloaded our XP
off an illegal site somewhere (though I really have no way of finding out -
he also could have got it off other friends who have illegal XP copies)
