my connector lines are greyed out in word 2003 version

Does anyone know how to get my connector lines to work if they are greyed out
in autoshapes? Everything else under autoshapes works fine except the
connectors.
 
To use connectors you must be in a drawing canvas. Insert one using Insert |
Picture | New Drawing.
