I accidentally deleted "my computer" from my desktop and file list. How can
I restore it?? I am running WinXPHomeSP1. If I install SP2, will that
reinstall "My Computer" or will I have to reinstall the original OS from
Dell??
Thanks. njmeatball

Thanks for your quick response...

By file list, I mean that when I click on Windows Explorer, it opens a two
pane window with a folder list on the left and a folder & file list on the
right. "My Documents" and "My Network Places" are there in the left pane,
but "My Computer" is not!!

BTW, when I right click on an open area of my desktop and click "Propertie",
all I get are disply properties!! I do not have a "Desktop" tab, possibly
because "My Computer" was deleted??

Any other ideas?? BTW, I used System Restore back several weeks and it
still did not restore it...

Thanks. This worked; I now have "My Computer" on my desktop. It does not
work the same as it used to in that when it is launched, it has totally blank
pane, but if I click on "Folders", the folder pane opens, and it I click on
a drive, the right pane (list of folders and files) opens. I don't know if
it is related to the deletion of "My Computer", but it WILL NOT save the view
I choose [I like the old "Program Manager" / "Details" view. I can get that
view, but is it temporary. I will probably add a new post to see if there is
a way to fix that.]

Thanks for your help. I had gotten from another user group how to get a "My
Computer" short cut onto my desktop. Both approaches have the same
deficiencies.

Hi, I've got a serious suggestion now...

Go onto the following link and download tweakui.exe from the column on the
right hand side.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

It's a fantasticp rogram to change little annoying things that most users
are aware of doing (ie, removing the annoying "12 unread messages" from the
login screen etc...

One of the options in there is to show or hide drives within my computer.

Now I don't know of anyone who's lost MY COMPUTER, but in situations where a
Users main folder is a mapped drive (ie, not locally held on the computer,
actually on a network server) then it's easy to remove access to other
drives, by unchecking the appropriate boxes (it also can stop people using
flash drives etc...)

What I suggest is that you take this piece of software - find under the MY
COMPUTER section, and see if the drives are disabled from being viewed, or
not enabled.

Check the boxes and click apply then close it down, log off, log back in and
see if it's working again. (you do not need to shut down your computer as it
will only apply these changes to your account.

Hope this helps, please let me know how you get on

Thanks. As you can see from my post of 4/14/2007 5:00 PM PST, I have "My
Computer" back on my "Desktop" by using the toggle from
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm (Enable/Disable My Computer
Icon) Line 276, 1st column

I have also learned that there is another way to recreate system folders
like "My Computer" and that is through the CLSID codes. For "My Comp;uter"
the CLSID code is {20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}. If you create a
new folder on the Desktp and name it My
Computer.{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D} , it will generate a "new"
virtual folder called "My Computer" and even have the correct icon!!

So this problem has been resolved, but I am still trying to fix the problem
that led to my discovery that the "My Computer" icon / "folder" was missing
in the first place, namely that when I chanfe the Folder View option to
Details and save that as applying to all folders, it does not really save
that preference, so when I open a folder again, I get the Window Explorer
default of Icons and NOT Details. I haven't yet been able to find how to fix
that!!

Thanks for your help. BTW, the website where I learned about the CLSID
number approach to fixing the missing "My Computer" icon problem was
http://vlaurie.com/computers2/Articles/system_folders.htm (actually page two
of this article).
