My cd rom drive dosent work

my cd rom dirve (D doesnt find a disc when there is a disk in it what do i
do?

You may need to replace the drive.

I have a CD/DVD rom drive. I can r/w DVDs and now read only a very few CDs.
This started happening after a 'Windows Update'.
If I have a CD in the drive and boot the computer it will hang until I open
the drive.
Just for grins I took my drive out and put in a clean drive, installed XP
and installed everything from 'Windows Update' and NOTHING else. Guess
what... My 'Designed for Microsoft Windows XP' machine is incapable of
reading the cd rom now.
Again, I installed nothing but Microsoft Updates.
