my burner won't work....HELP!

every time i go to burn a cd, i get either the message "CDR not detected" or "Burning Engine not found". My combo drive is properly installed...what is going on?
 
Do you have the DVD software installed? It should have come with your DVD
burner. XP does not contain software for DVD operations.
