MX record

When creating an MX record do you just leave the host blank?
In other words, I have an A record for mail.mydomain.com and an
MX record for mail.mydomain.com. But if I do a lookup for an MX
record for mydomain.com none exists. Do I need to create another
MX record without a host name?

Yes. Delete the first one.
