I am running xp pro, have a small lan and dhcp. My Win98
boxes have no problem staying connected. The 2 new xp
Pro machines lose connection to the router intermittently
several times an hour. they usually regain the
connection after a few minutes on their own, or if I hit
repair connection this resolves it immediately. Have
checked cables, settings, etc. Why does Xp do this? I
can still connect with the other computers on the
network, just not the internet or the router itself.

If both PCs have gigabit NICs and are connecting to a 100mbps device, try
locking down the network cards to 100mbps/full duplex.

Tried that, didn't work (good idea though) I have to repair the connection
every 10-15 minutes, and it works fine then. I can't ping the router, but
I can access the other computers on the network. Also, the network doesn't
show as disconnected (cable unplugged, etc.) I'd guess it was a router
problem, but my 4 win 98 machines have no problem, only the 2 new xp pro
machines. (yes I tried switching cables etc)

if your router acts as an dhcp and your pc gets its ip automatically,
check the dhcp settings (e.g. the duration of DHCP-Leases) on the router.

Mike,

please have a look at http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm.
One guess would be 802.1X authentication mistakenly enabled, but
there are others.
