music sounds bad

I have a good sound card that I had on windows 98, converted to windows xp but the music sounds like it plays in hollow tube and you can't hardly hear any singing, games work good, what do i do

I installed the correct drivers off of driver update for XP but it don't matter. I even tried the original sound card on the mother board, same thing, I have a creative 128 pci card in there now, the speakers are older but they played fine on windows 98, do they have to be XP compatibale by some chance
