how can i do simple music notation in Word?

Hi Pat

You can download a template to create notation paper at
http://office.microsoft.com/en-au/results.aspx?Scope=TC&Query=music.

You can insert a few basic symbols at Insert > Symbol. Or, if you have a
Tablet PC, you can draw the notation on the staff paper.

But Word wasn't designed to create "real" music. For that you need a
specialist application such as Sibelius.

Sibelius is the way to go. Sadly, very expensive unless you know someone in
Kuala Lumpur.

If your budget is more beer than champagne, try Noteworthy Composer
(www.noteworthysoftware.com, US$39). It isnt' top of the line, but it's
better than Word by a very long way.

Lilypond is the way to go. Fortunately, it's free(gratis) AND

I have used this once many years ago, and it's not bad. Don't know the
current version though.

You might have some success with the Bach font
(<http://www.music.qub.ac.uk/~tomita/bach-mf.html>).

However, I recommend a proper music notation program, preferrably one
which allows you to export its notation image to MS Word.

My personal preference is the program Mozart
(<http://www.mozart.co.uk>); it provides a fully functional trial
download, a free reader, and excellent support in a Yahoo-based
discussion forum/mailing list. It also provides IMHO the most economical
method of entering music items from a computer keyboard, and is very
well priced (US$120).
