Music files play in 2-3 seconds

I have had songs of normal length play quite well several times. Then, when
I try to play it again, it zips through in just a couple or so seconds with
nothing but a screech. This has happened to several songs, but not all. I
have Media Player 9, but don't think that is the problem. I think this has
happened only with WAV files, but I'm not sure that is true. As far as I
know, they are not protected. It seems to be a speed problem, but I'm
guessing.

Can anyone tell me where I might begin to look to figure this one out? Nay
suggestions to be able to recover them?

Any help will be really appreciated. Thank you --

Upgrading to WMP10 may solve the problem. Also your soundcard may
be starting to deteriorate. Do not upgrade to WMP11, too many problems
encountered at present. Check your sound speed at Start>Control Panel>
Sounds and Audio>Audio tab>Sound Playback>Advanced>Performance tab>
Full and Best. Check your MP3, WAV, WMA, etc. files if also have problems.

Thank you for your ideas.

All of the audio settings in the Control Panel are as you recommended.
Also, I think this has happened only for WAV files, but I have to check
further to be sure.
Since this doesn't hapen with most other songs -- it seems totally random --
I wonder about the soundcard. Is there a way to check it -- Windows
diagnostics says its OK. Also, other songs in the same folder or playlist
are OK.

Any other thoughts you might have will be helpful.
