I have a computer (Windows XP Pro) with accounts for my wife and kids.
My AV software is running in each account. It appears like I have
several versions running - one for each account. The PC is quite slow
now.

Is Norton AV running for each user account? If so, how can I get it to
run for just the PC and release some resources?

The Norton antivirus is going to slow down your computer a lot, every time
you log on you need to wait between 2-4 seconds to actually use your
computer, and if you add to this the kind of jung is installed every time you
surf. Made things bad.
***There are free antivirus that does not take a lot of your computer to
work****
Example: AVG, Avast, Nod32, and others.
You need to do this:
1-check how much ram your computer have ( 512 Mb is minimun for a good
performance)
2-You need to do disk defragment ( hit run - type...dfrg.msc - enter -
defragment)
3-You need to eleminate start up processes you dont use ( example adove,
messenger, others)
4- go to start - run - type...inetcpl.cpl - enter - you need to do :
delete cookies, delete files and offline files, go to settings and change
for "dont save, and space in hard drive in 0 Mb...Also clear history and
reduce the time to 3 days... in the privacy tab - advanced - select block
third party cookies...Also in Advanced tab look for security, here look for
empty temporary internet files and check this box - aply - Ok ****this #4
step needs to be done in each user***

5- You need a software that eliminates spyware, run scan a least once a week:

adware is go free choice:

Spyware blaster:

there are more steps, but for now you have enough :-)

I know it's a bit of a hog, but I find it to be the best choice over
the rest. AVG simply kills every machine I have ever put it on and then
will not uninstall.

On this, I said to myself, no problem. I always pay for extra RAM. But
I could not remember if I had 512MB or 1GB. To my surprise, the system
registered only 256MB - memory modules went bad. Time to order more.

This is only the second time in 10+ years that I have had memory go bad
on me.
