Multiple series 3d stacked bar chart

Tim

Hi

As new to this group, I apologise in advance if this has been asked before
(many times I'd guess).

Imagine I have a number of servers, each with xGB used and yGB free, and
have data for this over a range of months. Can I produce a 3d stacked bar
chart or area chart with server on the x-axis, month on y, while z shows
both free and used GB stacked? I can't find a way of achieving this in
Excel, but is there any add-on (free or commercial) that might allow me to
do this?

Thanks

Tim

Is there any more data you want to analyze in the chart?
You can do quite a bit with Pivot Tables and Charts. It
sounds like it would work for this kind of a problem. I set
up columns for your xGB, yGB, and Month. What is the end
result data/information you are trying to get out of this?

The OP wants a stacked column chart, with a 2D array of stacks. In a
column chart you can have a 2D array of nonstacked columns, or a 1D
array of stacked columns. My question is whether Tim really needs the
stacks, since you only need one to indicate the % used (the % free is
100% minus that, so it's redundant).

Since, in the example I submitted of several servers with xGB free and yGB
used, each server's total capacity is different, the %age route wouldn't
work. Broadly my data may look like

Name, Month,GB used, GB free
servera,jan, 100,50
servera,feb, 90,60
....
serverb,jan,200,40
serverb,feb, 210,30
....

and so on. As initially posted, I'd like server name along the x axis, month
along the y, with Gb free stacked on GB used on the z/vertical axis.

I thought something like Powerplug:Charts from CrystalGraphics might do me,
but while its 3d facilities are impressive, I haven't found a way to include
both the GB used and GB free series.

I know there must be something out there since I don't think my request is
all that unusual, and I'm equally sure I saw something like this in a demo
of CA's Unicenter some time back.

Hope that explains my requirement a little better - I'm looking for a
3d-chart for 3d data!

3d-chart for 3d data!

Just stumbled across various sites/ng messages (probably from some of this
ng's stalwarts) that approaches what I'm after. They describe how to depict
multiple stacked bar charts for each category through the use of blank
categories and a very strange staggerred tabling of the data. I tried this
and managed to represent the monthly usage of each server side-by-side
against the server name, and added some depth through the use of a 3d-chart.

However, I'd like to go a step further and have a true 3d representation
with each server's monthly usage stacked one behind another rather than side
by side. Despite ingenious 'tricks' such as the one described above, I doubt
seriously if Excel itself can manage what I want. Anyone know of an add-in
that would?

Thanks

Tim -

You can fake it by making a separate chart for each row of stacked
columns, making most features of the front one(s) invisible, and lining
the charts up carefully. I have a handy example I made recently using
stacked 3d area charts instead of stacked 3d columns, but you should get
the idea. I'm sending the workbook to what might be your real email address.
