MULTIPLE SCREENS APPEARANCE

When I closed down IE the other night, I briefly saw about fifty identical
opening screens stacked directly behind the screen I was closing. I haven't
seen this since, but my computer does seem a bit sluggish despite my cleaning
up the registry. Does this mean that I have fifty IE's working in the
background somewhere and I haven't been able to close them? Or what? I have a
Dell Dimension and with Windows XP. Thanks much.

Looking in task manager will tell you if IE is running, even when no windows
are open on the screen. Some sites will pop up multiple windows when you
try to close them, but usually it's up front, not behind the scenes.

Do a thorough scan for malware to be sure. I have included some links for
that.

Lastly, there is no benefit to running a registry cleaner. They are a snake
oil remedy that can cause more problems than they fix. There is nothing to
be gained by removing unused entries from the registry, but removing the
wrong ones can cause significant problems. Edit the registry manually when
needed because of a specific problem, to remove particular entries that are
causing the problem but avoid the use of a registry cleaner.

Thanks much for your prompt, informed answer. I checked into task manager and
it appears I wasn't running multiple programs. Good. I have bookmarked the
Haper Guide to Cleaning Pests and will go through his suggestions when I get
a decent block of time available.

Again, many thanks for your help
