Hello Group

Here's a really easy question for you with what's probably a really easy
answer, but Excel Help is no help so I need your help.

I have two Windows shortcuts to open separate Excel files. What I'd like is
that they open the files in two separate instances of Excel instead of in
the one instance. When I'm working with two workbooks I find it easier to
switch between two applications than to flick between two open workbooks
using the toolbar option. Can anybody help?

Best wishes

Hi Peter,
Have you tried Tools|Options, open View tab and check Windows in Taskbar?
Available in XL2002 (and I think in XL2000 but cannot recall it if is in
XL97)
This gives an icon in the taskbar for each open XL file. Much better than
two instances which can make using PERSONAL.XLS problematic.

Hello Bernard

Nope, that option isn't available in Excel 97. But, luckily, I'm getting a
new PC in the next couple of months, and will finally update to Win
XP/Office 2002, so now I know the function is available I will be able to
look out for it. Thanks for your help.

Best wishes

Rather than double-clicking on the shortcut, try using the right
mouse button, and clicking "Send To >> Excel".

You might not see "Excel" in the "Send To" menu at first. To add it
there, put a shortcut to the Excel program into the folder
C:\Windows\SendTo\

Hello Jay

Thanks for that. It does work, although it seems to at least partially
defeat the object of having a quick shortcut on the desktop...
