Multiple Desktops

My desktop is rather cluttered with shortcuts, but I use most of them. I've
seen on Linux that it's possible to have 4 desktops for the same user and to
customise each one. Is the same possible on Windows XP Home? I could just
create additional users, but that isn't really what I want. Can we configure
Win XP to do this, or do we need additional software?

True. What you may also want to consider as a more effective use of
shortcuts is a shortcut "Dock". Many of the coolest are free
(Y'sDock, Aqua Dock, Object Dock).......ObjectDock has a "pay" version
that allows for endless shortcuts to be categorized in a separate
folder type dock. If you ask me.....multiple desktops is just extra
cluster space.....using what you have efficiently is always cleaner.
