have scanned for viruses and spyware and comes back clear.... what the heck is going on?

Open event viewer, click on an event/warning,then click on the url, this opens
help/support in xp,usually with a fix or answer to it.

You made a backup first right?

You may need to drop back to your backup and try again.

fresh, clean install

i have had Internet explorer, Firefox, explorer.exe, Doom3.exe all crash
with varying errors ...

must be somthing up... this system had no such issues with winxp sp1

Sounds like you are listing programs that all need internet access. Is this
the case?

no i dont think so. doom3 is a game and it has crashed in explorer.exe which
is the windows shell.
