multiple backups until word stops responding

Whenever I type a manuscript (a process that unfortunately takes quite a lot of time) Word will slowly create so many temporary backup files (sligtly opaque in windows explorer) that the system eventually stops working, at that point Word stops responding and gives an error message syaing there is not enough memory to perform a save or even create a rescued document. I've tried re-installing the whole program, and Endnote as well in case it was the source. No relief. The IT guys say they need to completely erase the whole hard drive, but I find that a little extreme. Any thoughts??

While you're doing all this typing... Do you ever stop and perform a SAVE? Like every ten minutes or so?

The saving is what creates the temp files--one for every time you save.
<sigh> It helps to close and reopen from time to time. If these files are
piling up on a floppy, be warned that working from a floppy is risky for
this very reason. It's better to save to/open from the HD, then copy to/from
the floppy.
