Multihomed DNS fails query

Hello all,

I'm having a little trouble with a DNS configuration I was hoping someone
could help me out with.

I have a multihomed Windows 2003 DNS server. One NIC is public and one is
private. I want it to only resolve addresses on the public interface, not
on the private (not an AD domain). I have only the public IP address bound
through the DNS Properties Interfaces tab. The problem is, however, when
I run the simple and recursive test queries offered on the DNS Properties
Monitoring tab, both test fail. If I bind both IP addresses to DNS the test
queries pass. They also pass if I disable the private NIC. I don't want to
bind to the private network however, nor do I want to disable the private
NIC. Anyone have any solutions?

Your help would be most appreciated.

Set a forwarder and the problem *should* go away. If the external is the
primary one, change the binding order to the external one to be the top.
This will however cause you lengthier connect times to internal resources.

Also, if hosting external data, ensure to remove the private IP out of the
Namesservers Tab.
