Multi-user environment / locking question

We have a department here that is trying to have 30 or so people inputting
data at the same time (data entry people at a very high rate) on the same
table of the same ms access database. They're having problems where the
database locks up...

Intuitively from my work with Access I'm quite certain that Access can't
hold up to that kind of multi-user writing because of it's locking scheme.
I have two questions:

1. Am I correct that Access isn't the best suited product for such high
volume?
2. Are there any MS Articles (or other) that explain or support this? I did
research some time ago and found the information, but it doesn't seem to
turn up as easily now...

I doubt very much (but I could be wrong) that Access will stand up to that
type of use.
