Multi-service IM client recommendations

I'm currently using the free version of Trillian for
what little IM-type communicating I do. While it works,
I'm finding that I'm getting a little irritated with all
the neat kewel feechurs like selectable skins and
suchlike.

Are there plainer freeware packages with equivalent
functionality out there?

The program can use modules to extend functionality, so you can
leave in/get rid of just the functionality you want.

GAIM. Straight-forward, smallish app w/an active community.

When you're away from your own computer, you might check out Meebo
(http://www.meebo.com). It's one of the snazziest pieces of AJAX I've
seen in a long time. It runs in Firefox and IE (unfortunately Opera
support isn't there yet), and has all of the window-management features
you'd expect in a desktop client. They're continually improving it
with new stuff... and yes, it is indeed free. Check it out!

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I've been using Pulver Communicator for some time. It's free and it
includes all the popular messengers plus Skype--which I find useful.
Hopefully, Google Talk will be included soon.

Version 94.3 is stable.

Actually, they don't have inbuilt support for Skype, you need the
Skype client itself running in the background for
pulver.Communicator to use it. Currently, it's impossible for any IM
client to implement the Skype protocol since it's proprietary and
closed.

pulver.Communicator does seem to have support for SIP networks,
which is a standardized VoIP protocol. Nicely done!
