I have several computers connecting to a wireless router for internet access.
Is it possible to directly connect two computers (one running XP home , the
other running Win 2000) using an ethernet cable for the sole purpose of
multiplayer gaming and printer sharing whilst still maintaining a seperate
wireless internet connection without having one take the internet through the
other?

You don't need to go through all that. Because you've got the router,
you already have a home network - you just haven't set up the file and
printer sharing part yet.

1. Since you have a mixed operating system network, create identical
user accounts/passwords on both machines.

2. Share out the resources you'd like - files, folders, printers. On the
Win2k box make sure you set the permissions on the shares to
"Everybody". The XP Home machine will not allow access to users' home
directories (My Documents) or Program Files - use the Shared Files
folder instead.

3. On both machines configure whatever firewalls are running to allow
the lan range as trusted. The subnet will be whatever is provided by
your router, so the range should be something like
192.168.1.0-192.168.1.254.
