MTU settings

Is it possible for a program (or virus, though I have uptodate AV software)
to change the MTU settings for my network connection without me knowing?

Yesterday, my client pc wouldn't connect to most web sites but it would talk
to some and to the host pc. After lots of hair-pulling, I found that the MTU
setting for the network connection on the host pc had changed from 1458 to
about half that. Changed it back and all worked fine.

Just trying to fathom why it changed in the first place.

Not the expert here but I think 1500 is "ideal" - in my case, it's too high
and packets get dropped. I've tested it with a ping test and 1458 is the
highest that doesn't get a data loss.
