MSXML Versions

Guest

Hi ,
just to confirm i have understood this correctly, MSXML comes as 2.6, 3.0
and 4.0 and they can all be on the same system, is there any point in
installing the version 4.0 ? or will applications install them automatically.
Plus there is no harm in installing the latest service packs for the
versions installed on to the systems?

thanks

You should keep the versions installed on a system at their
latest service pack level (with all normal update precautions)
I think minor patches will just fail if the underlying version is
not installed, but be careful of the service pack releases as
this can just install the whole thing.

You'll find most systems will indeed have v2.5, 2.6 and 3.0 whether that be
from the OS or from common MS components (IE, MDAC, or a security patch).
4.0 doesn't come with anything from MS at this point. If an application
needs it, they will either document it as a requirement for you to manually
install or they will ship it with the app.
Although there is no need to install 4.0 unless it is needed for something,
I would recommend keeping them all up-to-date. There is some upcoming
products that will make the use of 4.0 required, so you may want to install
it and be ready for it (optional).

Check out the 'Components' checklist from this website's mspatches.xls
security checklists. Good info, including a link to MSXML shipping vehicles.
