MSWorks .WKS to Office Excel .XLS

My old .wks files come up via Excel as an 'unknown format'
and the data as presented by Excel is worthless. MS has
no conversion download because this is supposed to be a
direct-convert function. Well, it isn't working that way
for me.
Has anyone experienced this problem, too?
Did you resolve it without re-cutting lotsa worksheets?

Open in Works and save as excel format or save as txt format

Lady Layla, Ma'am,

Nice handle ...

Works went with my old Windows system, and this my PC was
the only one in the family network with Works...

Tried the .txt save, but still had the same problem ...
where should I save it to .txt from? or, copy/rename?
