mstask.exe

mstask.exe is missing from c:\windows\system32. Can this file be replaced?
Is it necessary for the system to perform properly?

I am using XP Pro sp2.

Try Start, Run, type "sfc /scannow" without quotes and hit Enter.

Thanks for the feedback.

I ran the suggested application; however, mstask.exe, is still absent. The
Task Scheduler seems to work, but checking its properties found that it
refers to the following target:

%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe
::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\::{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}\::{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}

There is a orphaned startup key present in the registry that refers to
mstask.exe. It is the foloowing:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunService\Scheduling c:\windows\system32\mstask.exe.

After searching extensively, I have found no info concerning whether this is
having an impact on my system or how to reinstall this system file. Is it
required in WinXP sp2?

Does removal of the orphaned start up key remove the problem. Save the
key first so you can restore it if removal causes other problems.
