Does anybody know what mstask.exe really does? Why does
it constantly attempt to access the internet? How does it
override my firewall settings in ZoneAlarm?

I suspect you're infested with some sort of pest. So far as I can tell,
mstask.exe on my system has never attempted any sort of Internet access.
