MSQuery error:Cross Join option is not enabled.

I am trying to download data into Excel using MSQuery. I require a LEFT Outer
Join, but that option is greyed out when I double-click the join line and if
i try to type it into the SQL I get the folloewing error message:
**ERROR**(1612) The query requires a cross join, but the cross join option is
not enabled. I could not find this error in the MSQuery help file nor in the
KB.

Nor could I find any meny item that allowed me to set this option.

How do I get the left/right outer joins to work.

XP Pro, MSO 2003
