MSN8 (Re: Hotmail)
Windows XP Home

When attempting to retrieve email either from my MSN8
HomePage > Mail & More OR from the MSN Messenger Icon in
Taskbar lower right next to clock I get the following
message instead: "WINDOWS CANNOT OPEN THIS FILE. FILE:
MSN25.mailhost"

The message box that opens says "WINDOWS" in upper left
top of box and continues:

"To open this file Windows needs to know what program
created it. Windows can go on line to look it up
automatically, or you can manually select from a list of
programs on your computer. etc, etc."

Note that each time I attempt to open the email the number
in the file name changes. e.g. MSN25.mailhost might then
change to MSN76.mailhost or MSN1D.mailhost...different
each time.

NOTE: I AM ABLE TO RETRIEVE EMAIL FROM MY OUTLOOK EXPRESS
WITH NO PROBLEM. IT'S ONLY WHEN TRYING TO OPEN HOTMAIL
EMAIL FROM THE TWO MESSENGER LOCATIONS.

I called MSN Technical Support and the tech said it is NOT
an MSN problem because it says "Windows cannot open this
file" and that I should call my computer mfr Dell.

FYI: I received the following reply from a support forum
that I visited today:

"There's no Knowledge Base article on it, but searching
the newsgroups suggests that reinstalling MSN8 on top of
itself corrects it. Reportedly it's an issue with the
hidden folder that stores mail... MSN 8 Folders.MailDB is
the one they refer to.

In my opinion, MSN Support should have been responsible.
The fact Windows can't open it isn't the issue. The issue
is Windows can't open an MSN item, and if the rest of your
computer is running fine, then it's something with their
end of things."

Any ideas on what I can do to fix this problem? I am
experiencing no other problems with my system.

Thank you,
Larry
