Ran a spyware program "spykiller" deleted the entries that
came up, now when I type any word in the address bar and
press enter there is no search initiated, if I type a url
then the relevant site is found, it seems I have deleted a
line from the registry, can anyone help me solve this
problem.

Thanks

First off make sure you have search from the address bar enabled.
In Internet Explorer go to Tools and Select the Advanced Tab.
Scroll almost to the bottom for "Search from the Address bar" and make sure "Do not search..." is NOT selected

If this isn't the problem, the registry key you are looking for should be found at "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search"
There should be two seperate Reg String Values, "CustomizeSearch" and "SearchAssistant".
Thier default value in Win Xp is "http://ie.search.msn.com/{SUB_RFC1766}/srchasst/srchasst.htm"
As always, backup your registry before you make any changes

Hope that helps
