MSN Messenger causes lockup

I've been plagued by random crashes/lockups lately, usually with
absolutely no info in event viewer. Finally got one that prompted to
send diagnostic data to MS. The end result was a message from
Microsoft about MSN Messenger:

Odd thing though: I have the Messenger service disabled. Is there any
other possible cause?

Messenger Service is not the same thing as MSN Messenger.
 
In spite of the name, Messenger Service is not part of MSN Messenger.
Have you followed the other 3 steps on that link?
For the second and third, it is not necessary to use the Microsoft tools.
But you should us something to check for and remove spyware and another for
viruses.
