If you want to kill MSN all together no outside software is needed.
You can kill it by making one or two small changes in the registry and
booting your computer. And like all registry tweaks it's always a
good idea to backup the registry like shown here
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;322756)
before making any changes to it.
Go to the one of the following links and you should be able to stop
MSN from starting or being started.
http://www.updatexp.com/disable-messenger-msn.html
and
http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php?id=981
I personally used both the "PreventAutoRun" and "PreventRun" registry
tweaks (entered by hand) since I have no desire to be bothered by it's
use.

policy.
Start/Run "gpedit.msc"
Under "Local Computer Policy\Administrative Templates\Windows Components
\Windows Messenger", double click "Do not allow Windows Messenger to be
run",
click "Enabled", then "OK", then close the "Group Policy" window.
That should do it, and should work regardless of the version of MS
Messenger.
