I'd just use a firewall and block it there - as long as the admin
section of your firewall is password protected, that's the end of
MSN's chances of connecting.

If you want to kill MSN all together no outside software is needed. You can
kill it by making one or two small changes in the registry and booting your
computer. And like all registry tweaks it's always a good idea to backup
the registry like shown here
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;322756) before
making any changes to it.

Go to the one of the following links and you should be able to stop MSN from
starting or being started.
http://www.updatexp.com/disable-messenger-msn.html
and
http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php?id=981

I personally used both the "PreventAutoRun" and "PreventRun" registry tweaks
(entered by hand) since I have no desire to be bothered by it's use.

I dont know of any program, here is a manual method, email me if you
want a hand & we can exchange screenshots.

Edit your hosts file which in XP can be found in >
windows\system32\drivers\etc
Note the spelling is hosts, not host.

Editing can done by right clicking on the file & selecting Edit, or if
you get a popup, you have to choose a program to open it with.
Click on Notepad. If that is not shown, click on Browse down the bottom
& locate Notepad.
The path can be found this way, Start > All Programs > Accessories (
once again XP )
Right click on Notepad > Properties & Target tells me it's in >
%SystemRoot%\system32\notepad.exe
SystemRoot means C drive ( or the drive you have Windows on )

So you have clicked on Browse, next popup > Look in: select your
Windows drive ( probably C )
Doubleclick on the Windows folder, doubleclick on the System32 folder,
single click notepad & click > Open.
Click any OK's.

Down the bottom of Notepad, Copy & Paste the files below, close & Save.
127.0.0.1 https://login.passport.com
127.0.0.1 login.passport.com
127.0.0.1 messenger.msn.com
127.0.0.1 messenger.msn.ca
127.0.0.1 www.msn.com
127.0.0.1 msn.messenger.net
127.0.0.1 hotmail.msn.com
127.0.0.1 loginnet.passport.com

Just remembered another way.

Go into C:program Files > Messenger.
Rename the Messenger folder to something like "MessengerOFF"
Make sure it is not running in the background ( down on the bar next to
the Time, right click & click on exit )

1. open windows\inf\sysoc.inf (hidden) with a text editor.

2. change "msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7" to
"msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7"

3. Now the messenger appears in the
control_panel\software\windows_components (or similar) dialogue and can be
uninstalled.

You might de-hide other components in sysoc.inf but be careful.

An easier way:

Note: This tweak is applicable to MSN Messenger 4.x, this restriction has
been removed from version 5 of the software.

I know you've received a few suggestions. Here's another: use group policy.

Start/Run "gpedit.msc"
Under "Local Computer Policy\Administrative Templates\Windows Components
\Windows Messenger", double click "Do not allow Windows Messenger to be run",
click "Enabled", then "OK", then close the "Group Policy" window.

That should do it, and should work regardless of the version of MS Messenger.

Only works in XP Pro though, I think.
